Home Cafe, Chinatown

The wait is finally over! For many months, I've waited in anticipation of a new cafe/wine bar to open in Sydney. The new Home Cafe (will eventually be called Home Wine Bar) Chinatown will open its doors to Sydney on Friday, 24th August 2012. It is located corner of Dixon Lane and Liverpool Street. Home Cafe Chinatown is the third installment from a series of Home establishments. Namely: Home Thai on Sussex Street and Home Cafe QVB (my favourite spot for coffee in the morning!).

Sam with Home's coffee roaster

After almost a year, Sam's (one of the owners) labour of love has borne fruit. From the wooden fixtures of the bar/counter area to the light fixtures, Sam's bare hands (well, there were tools involved and some help from other people too of course) and brilliant ideas brought this place to life. Simon Park (the heart of food) and I were fortunate enough to be invited to their private launch party to sample a little bit of what's to come. Home Cafe is split into two levels. The ground level is a café from early in the morning until late at night. It has a mixture of stylish industrial brick walls and rustic wooden decor. The second level serves as an intimate Thai tapas/dining area. It consists of contemporary wooden tables and chairs, exotic Southeast Asian themed light fixtures and decor.

Here are some of the awesomeness that we experienced during the launch:

I spy...baked goods!

Piccolo latte

Caffe Latte
Ok, one of the things that excited me is that they will be using Mecca Espresso for their coffees. The dark horse blend in particular. When the use of Mecca coffee beans is combined with Zhu Jet's (or simply Jet) off the hook barista skills, exquisite coffee (that will trump over many coffees) will be produced in this place.
Flat white
In my opinion, Jet makes the best flat white!  A thin layer of velvet froth is present in this beverage with milk frothed and heated at the perfect temperature. The earthy and subtle taste of the espresso extract blends well with the milk. There is no acidic or bitter after-taste.
Long black

Nick (another champ who works for Home) mentioned that I would appreciate the beans more if I had it as a long black. Compared to other long blacks I had, this was so easy on the taste buds. It didn't have much of that acidic after taste.

Jet also treated us to an aero press coffee. I won't go into detail of the process but this method produces coffee with light consistency. It's almost like drinking tea.

Pintxos of barbecue pork sandwich and poached salmon wraps

Barbecue pork with apple slaw sandwich
The barbecue pork with apple slaw sandwich has slices of tender and tasty pork belly, apple slaw, and creamy homemade barbecue mayo sauce.

The spiced meatballs topped with grated cheese and filled with cheese. Yes, you read it right, filled with cheese. This will eventually be a part of a pasta dish they will serve in their lunch menu.

I love potato wedges! I especially like the way Home's potato wedges are seasoned with spiced salt.

The prawn salad is sensational! It is drizzled with Thai style vinaigrette that showcases freshness and harmony between sour and salty flavours.

Oh man, this rice balls filled shredded coconut, sugar & crushed nuts are so good! The spoon it is contained in also holds some sweet coconut milk soup. I wish that I had more of these babies.

Home Cafe Chinatown will open this Friday from 6:30am. The cafe kitchen closes at 2:30pm but they will continue to serve coffee until 5pm.  Around two weeks from now, the wine bar restaurant will open from 5:00pm till late. I am so glad that we now finally have a joint in the Sydney city centre that offers great coffee and scrumptious cafe food. I’m so excited to pay them a visit soon to try their lamb burger. Congratulations Home!

Ramen Raff was invited by Home Cafe as a guest

Lamb & rosemary burger
I went back to Home Cafe soon after their launch to try their lamb & rosemary burger with homemade spicy potato wedges ($14). O-M-G!! It is enormous and awesome on many levels! It had a juicy lamb patty that is packed with flavour. It also had melted cheese, caramelised onions, tomato and baby spinach. The bun used was soft sourdough bread.
BBQ pork ribs
A new addition to the lunch menu is the BBQ pork ribs ($15.90). Chef Wat's new fusion creation is drool worthy and legen...(wait for it)...dary! The meat is so tender that it easily falls off the bones. It is covered with barbecue sauce that is tangy and a little bit sweet. Chef Wat mentioned that he wanted to exhibit the Thai style of being able to perfectly balance sweet and sour flavours. I love how the slight sweet taste from the balsamic vinegar creeps right at the end of every bite too. The ribs also come with a side of sourdough bread.
